Army Chief Visits Manipur, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Stability Amid Ongoing Ethnic Strife

Imphal, July 30, 2025 — Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi undertook a day-long visit to Manipur to assess the prevailing security situation and review the operational readiness of Indian Army and Assam Rifles formations deployed across the conflict-affected state.

The visit comes amid continued ethnic tensions between Meitei and Kuki communities, which have plagued Manipur since May 2023, resulting in over 200 deaths and widespread displacement. The state remains under President’s Rule, extended until February 2026, as joint security forces intensify operations against insurgent groups.

During his visit, General Dwivedi was briefed on ground realities and ongoing peace initiatives. He lauded the troops for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication under challenging circumstances. The Army Chief emphasized the importance of military-civil cooperation and the role of emerging technologies in building a future-ready force.

General Dwivedi also met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan, where discussions focused on collaborative efforts to restore normalcy and foster development. The Governor commended the Army’s execution of Operation Sindoor and its continued commitment to regional stability.

In a symbolic gesture of unity and youth engagement, the COAS attended the opening match of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at Khuman Lampak Stadium. The event featured cultural performances, military displays, and interactions with local football teams NEROCA FC and TRAU FC, marking the tournament’s return to Imphal after two years.

General Dwivedi’s visit reaffirmed the Indian Army’s enduring role in safeguarding Manipur’s security while promoting civil harmony and developmental progress.
