Assam Spearheads Northeast’s Highway Development with Massive Investment

Assam has emerged as the leading force in National Highway (NH) development within the Northeastern states, marked by a substantial investment and a significant number of ongoing projects.

Official data reveals that Assam holds the highest number of ongoing NH projects in the region, with a total investment reaching ₹39,239 crore. This figure signifies a major push towards bolstering infrastructure within the state.

Assam has received the largest allocation for NH development and maintenance, amounting to ₹5,329 crore. The state boasts the longest road length currently under construction in the Northeast.
While Assam leads, other Northeastern states are also seeing development, with varying levels of investment. For example, Arunachal Pradesh also has very large planned investments.
All ongoing NH projects across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura are targeted for completion by 2028.
The completion of these projects depends on many factors, including land aquisition, enviromental clearances, and contractor stability. To counter these problems, the government is working on streamlining land acquisition and increasing coordination between all relative parties.
This surge in highway development is expected to significantly improve connectivity, boost economic activity, and enhance overall development in the region.
