Bangladesh Reshuffles Army as New Prime Minister Takes Charge

In a swift move to consolidate authority, the newly elected government of Bangladesh has launched a major reshuffle of the Army’s top leadership, just days after Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Prime Minister. The restructuring, announced by Army Headquarters on Sunday, February 22, 2026, involves the reassignment of several senior officers to key operational and intelligence roles. Lieutenant General M. Mainur Rahman has been appointed as the new Chief of General Staff (CGS), while Major General Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury has taken over as the Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). As part of this sweeping transition, Brigadier General Md. Hafizur Rahman—who was serving as Bangladesh’s Defence Adviser in New Delhi—has been recalled to Dhaka, promoted to the rank of Major General, and appointed to lead the 55th Infantry Division.

This military overhaul follows a historic shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape. On February 17, 2026, Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), took the oath of office as Prime Minister at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building, ending 18 months of interim rule under Muhammad Yunus. The ceremony was attended by over 1,200 dignitaries, including India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who represented New Delhi in a gesture of diplomatic continuity. The reshuffle is seen by analysts as a strategic effort to align the military command with the new administration’s priorities, which include stabilizing the country’s security and addressing long-standing governance challenges. While the “India Adviser” (Defence Adviser) returns to take a commanding role at home, the focus in Dhaka remains on ensuring a smooth transition and reinforcing national sovereignty under the first elected government since the 2024 uprising.
