Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein was recently honored with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree (Honoris Causa) by Gauhati University during its 32nd convocation in Guwahati. The recognition was bestowed upon him by the Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Gauhati University, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in the presence of prominent figures like Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu.
This prestigious award acknowledges Mein’s multifaceted contributions to political leadership, cultural preservation, and social development. His political career includes serving as Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and holding key ministerial positions such as Finance and Power. As Deputy Chief Minister since 2016, he has played a pivotal role in transferring hydropower projects to public sector undertakings, significantly boosting the state’s development.
Mein’s efforts in cultural preservation have been remarkable. He has revitalized the Tai Khamti language and culture, promoted folk songs and music, and contributed to the construction of the Golden Pagoda in Namsai. Additionally, he has advocated for regional connectivity, pushing for the reopening of the historic Stilwell Road to strengthen ties between India and Southeast Asia.
Expressing his gratitude, Mein stated that he was deeply motivated by this recognition to continue his work in cultural preservation and public service.
