GST Department Issues ₹6.37 Crore Demand Notice to Britannia Industries

The GST authorities have issued a demand notice of ₹6.37 crore to Britannia Industries over alleged non-payment of tax due to incorrect classification of goods.
According to a regulatory filing, the order was issued by the Office of the Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Thane, on Monday. The demand pertains to the financial years 2020-21 to 2023-24 and has been passed under Section 74 of the GST Act.
As per the company’s statement, the tax component quantified in the order stands at ₹21,240,000, while the penalty amounts to ₹42,480,000, taking the total demand to ₹63,720,000, excluding applicable interest.
The authorities have alleged that the company incorrectly classified certain goods supplied during the specified period, resulting in short payment of GST.
Responding to the notice, Britannia said the order is appealable and that it will explore appropriate legal remedies under the GST law. “The order is appealable, and the company shall take necessary actions, including exercising the legal remedies available,” the company stated.
Britannia also clarified that the demand will have “no material impact on the financials, operations, or other activities” of the company.
The company, known for popular brands such as Good Day, Tiger, NutriChoice, and MarieGold, is one of India’s leading bakery and food product manufacturers.
