Headline: Income Tax Department Releases ITR-5 Excel Utility for Annual Filings

The Income Tax Department has announced the availability of the ITR-5 Excel utility, a dedicated software tool to facilitate the filing of annual income tax returns for the financial year 2024-25. This utility is specifically designed for a range of taxpayers, including firms, Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), Association of Persons (AOPs), Body of Individuals (BOIs), and artificial juridical persons.

The ITR-5 form is a comprehensive return form that caters to entities not falling under the ITR-1 to ITR-4 categories, or ITR-7, which is for charitable trusts and political parties. The newly released Excel utility aims to simplify the filing process by providing a user-friendly interface that allows taxpayers to enter their data offline. Once completed, the generated XML file can be uploaded to the official e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.

A senior official from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) stated that the department is committed to making the e-filing process as smooth and error-free as possible. The official advised taxpayers to download the utility from the official Income Tax India website, emphasizing that using the correct and updated version of the utility is crucial for a successful submission. The utility includes pre-filled data in some sections, which is intended to reduce manual data entry and minimize the chances of errors.

Experts in tax and finance have welcomed the release, noting that it provides a structured and efficient method for non-individual taxpayers to meet their compliance obligations. They recommend that taxpayers carefully review all the data entered, especially financial details and tax computations, before generating the XML file. The deadline for filing returns for these categories of taxpayers is October 31, 2025. The department has urged all eligible entities to utilize the new tool and file their returns well in advance of the deadline to avoid last-minute rush and potential technical glitches.
