India Achieves 4,000% Growth in Solar Capacity; Piyush Goyal Calls for Strengthening Domestic Supply Chain

India has achieved a landmark 4,000% growth in solar power generation capacity over the past decade, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, announced on Wednesday. Speaking at a national conference on “Green Energy and Economic Resilience,” the minister hailed the exponential rise in solar capacity as a major step toward India’s clean energy transition and global climate leadership.

“India’s solar capacity has grown from 2.6 GW in 2014 to over 125 GW in 2025, reflecting the country’s unwavering commitment to renewable energy,” Goyal said. “However, the next critical phase of this journey is to build a resilient and self-sufficient solar manufacturing supply chain.”

The minister emphasized that while India has emerged as one of the top solar energy producers in the world, the sector continues to rely on imports of key components such as solar wafers, cells, and modules — particularly from China. He stressed the importance of reducing this dependency by developing a robust domestic ecosystem for manufacturing solar equipment and components.

Goyal highlighted several government initiatives, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules, which is aimed at attracting investment, boosting domestic
