Kriti Sanon Highlights Subtle Gender Inequalities in Bollywood, Calls for Industry-Wide Mindset Shift

Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon has spoken candidly about the subtle yet persistent gender inequalities she has encountered in the film industry, urging for a shift in mindset and greater equity across all levels of production. Her remarks came during an exclusive conversation with NDTV, where she reflected on her personal experiences and broader observations as part of her new role as UNFPA India’s Honorary Ambassador for Gender Equality.

Sanon, known for her versatile performances and outspoken views, emphasized that while overt discrimination may be rare, ingrained biases continue to manifest in everyday decisions on film sets. “It hasn’t happened too many times, but little things like the male actor getting a better car or a better room… It’s not about the car, but about not making me feel smaller because I’m a woman. Just make it equal,” she said.

She also pointed out behavioral patterns that reflect deeper societal conditioning, such as assistant directors calling female actors first while waiting for male actors later. “I’ve had to tell them not to do that. The mindset needs to change,” Sanon added.

Drawing from her upbringing, Sanon credited her parents—both working professionals—for raising her and her sister in an environment free from gender-based restrictions. She contrasted this with her mother’s childhood, where girls were expected to stay home and follow rigid norms. “Her first thought for me was, ‘Do whatever you want to. Whatever you dream of, go for it.’ That came from her,” Sanon shared.

As UNFPA’s ambassador, Sanon aims to amplify conversations around gender parity and challenge stereotypes that limit women’s opportunities in both personal and professional spheres. Her advocacy underscores the importance of addressing not just structural inequalities, but also the everyday choices and attitudes that shape workplace culture.

On the professional front, Kriti Sanon is gearing up for the release of Aanand L Rai’s romantic drama Tere Ishk Mein, co-starring Dhanush, scheduled for November 2025. She is also reportedly set to begin filming Cocktail 2 alongside Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna.
