Meghalaya CM Unveils Solar-Powered Digital Classrooms at Tura Govt Girls’ School

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated solar-powered digital classrooms at Tura Government Girls’ School, marking a significant step toward technology-driven education in regions facing electricity shortages.

The initiative, supported by corporate social responsibility (CSR) partnerships, aims to provide uninterrupted learning through renewable energy solutions. The classrooms are equipped with solar panels, ensuring a consistent power supply for digital learning tools, even in areas with frequent electricity disruptions.

During the inauguration, CM Sangma emphasized the importance of integrating technology into education, stating, “Access to quality education should not be hindered by infrastructure challenges. These solar-powered classrooms will bridge the gap and empower students with modern learning tools.”

The Meghalaya government has allocated ₹1,400 crore for education sector improvements, including school renovations, teacher training, and digital infrastructure development.

The project was implemented in collaboration with Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE), P.A. Sangma Foundation, and Shree Cement, under their CSR initiatives. Sangma expressed gratitude to the partners for their continued support in empowering communities across Meghalaya.

Students at Tura Government Girls’ School welcomed the initiative, stating that digital learning tools would help them better understand complex subjects. Teachers also expressed enthusiasm, noting that interactive lessons would enhance student engagement and comprehension.

The Meghalaya government plans to expand the solar-powered classroom model to other schools across the state, particularly in rural and remote areas. The initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of sustainable development and equal access to education.
