Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Inaugurates UNESCO’s World Art Day Celebrations in Aizawl, Emphasises Art’s Role in Cultural Identity

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the World Art Day celebrations in Aizawl, emphasizing the deep connection between art and cultural identity. The event, organized in collaboration with the International Association of Art (IAA) India, highlighted the role of art in preserving heritage and fostering unity across communities.

Speaking at the event, Lalduhoma, who also serves as the chief patron of IAA Mizoram, underscored the historical significance of art in storytelling and cultural preservation. “Before we had writing systems, we told our stories through drawings. Among the Mizos too, art has long been used to reflect our thoughts, beliefs, and traditions,” he stated.

The Chief Minister praised UNESCO’s recognition of art as a tool for peace, healing, and education, noting that Mizoram’s unique culture and beauty should be documented and promoted through visual art. He also acknowledged the contributions of artists, filmmakers, writers, photographers, and performers as ambassadors of Mizoram’s heritage.

World Art Day, celebrated globally on April 15, marks the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci and was officially endorsed by UNESCO in 2019. The event in Aizawl featured a National Art Exhibition, a seminar on art, and discussions on the rich folk culture of Mizoram.

The celebration was attended by Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga, Information and Public Relations Minister Vanlalthlana, IAA India President Manaj Saha, and other dignitaries. The programme emphasized the importance of art in fostering understanding across different communities and highlighted the role of artists in promoting cultural heritage.

Following the inauguration, Lalduhoma visited the Art Gallery at the IPR auditorium, where curated works from various regions were displayed. The afternoon seminar, titled “Rich Folk Culture of ResilientMizos,” explored the interplay between traditional Mizo art and contemporary creative practices.

The event reinforced the power of art as a universal language, transcending religion, ethnicity, and language barriers. Lalduhoma’s speech resonated with attendees, urging continued support for Mizoram’s creative community and the preservation of cultural identity through artistic expression.
