Nagaland Governor unveils book on Lotha Naga heritage and traditions

Nagaland Governor La Ganesan officially launched the book The Lotha Naga Customary Law, Practices & Attires, authored by P. Pius Lotha, at a special event at Dr. Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima. The book serves as a vital documentation of Lotha Naga customs, traditions, governance, and attire, aimed at preserving the rich cultural heritage of the community.

Addressing an audience that included cultural leaders, government officials, and Lotha community members, Governor Ganesan praised the book as a landmark literary effort in safeguarding Naga traditions. He lauded P. Pius Lotha’s 14 years of meticulous research, calling the publication an invaluable source of knowledge for both the present and future generations.

“Our society has long relied on oral traditions,” the Governor stated. “This book ensures that our customs are not lost to time but preserved as a guiding force for generations ahead.” He further emphasized that tradition should not be viewed as a relic of the past, but as a foundation of identity, particularly in an era of globalization.

Governor Ganesan noted that initiatives like this bridge generations, fostering deeper understanding and respect for cultural roots. He expressed confidence that preserving Lotha Naga heritage would not only benefit Nagaland but contribute to India’s diverse cultural landscape.

Encouraging the Lotha community to act as custodians of their heritage, Governor Ganesan stressed that cultural identity remains the greatest legacy one can pass on. He commended the author’s perseverance, recognizing the book as a testament to dedication and scholarship.

The event was chaired by K.N. Mhonthung Lotha, Chairman of Kohima Lotha Hoho, who delivered the opening remarks. Author P. Pius Lotha shared insights into his research process, detailing his journey in compiling the book. Achumbemo Kikon, MLA and Chairperson of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Climate Change and Environment, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of preserving Naga customs and practices. Closing remarks were delivered by Jonas Yanthan, Treasurer of Kohima Lotha Hoho.

The book launch marks a significant step in safeguarding traditional knowledge and ensuring that the heritage of the Lotha Naga community is passed down to future generations.
