Nagaland govt to review 50-year-old reservation policy, says Tovihoto

Nagaland Advisor for Elections and Tribal Affairs, H. Tovihoto Ayemi, on Monday announced that the state government is reviewing its reservation policy, which has remained unchanged for over 50 years.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Walford and East Block Road in Ward 4, Dimapur, Tovihoto stressed the importance of reviewing such policies every ten years to maintain fairness and relevance. His remarks follow a 30-day ultimatum issued by five tribes—Ao, Lotha, Sumi, Angami, and Rengma—calling for urgent policy revision.

He also expressed satisfaction with the completion of the new roads, which span over 1,500 metres in length and 16.5 feet in width. The project was funded through the Tribal Affairs Department under Article 275(1) of the Constitution.

Tovihoto appreciated the joint efforts of several departments, including National Highways, PWD (R&B), BRO, and Urban Development, for enhancing Dimapur’s infrastructure.

Highlighting the changing urban landscape, he called for a fresh look at the roles of traditional institutions like Gaon Buras and village councils. He urged community leaders to work together for inclusive growth.

The event was chaired by CCW chairman Kato Yeptho and concluded with a prayer by Rev. Peuhau N Hau.
