Nagaland’s Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak has emphasized the importance of language in preserving tribal identity, calling it the strongest pillar of cultural heritage. Speaking at the launch of the book “A Descriptive Grammar of Konyak Language”, Konyak highlighted the need for linguistic preservation to safeguard the traditions and history of indigenous communities.
The event, held at the Konyak Union Conference Hall in Mon, saw the participation of tribal leaders, scholars, and government officials. Konyak, who served as the Guest of Honour, praised the efforts of the Konyak Literature Board in documenting the language, stating that such initiatives are crucial for ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots.
The book, which details the grammatical structure of the Konyak language, is expected to serve as a valuable resource for linguistic scholars and community members alike. The Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, urged citizens to support the initiative by purchasing copies, reinforcing the importance of language in strengthening tribal identity.
Konyak, the first woman from Nagaland to be elected to the Rajya Sabha, has been a vocal advocate for tribal rights and cultural preservation. Her remarks come at a time when indigenous languages across India face challenges due to modernization and declining usage.
