PM Modi: India Leading Global AI Transformation

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 commenced today at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking a historic milestone as the first major global AI gathering hosted in the Global South. Inaugurating the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India’s 1.4 billion people are at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution, driven by a unique blend of “ambition and responsibility.” The Prime Minister highlighted that India’s rapid progress in science and technology is no longer just a national achievement but a vital contribution to global development. He emphasized that the nation’s youth have transitioned from being job seekers to becoming the “co-architects” of the future, leveraging a vibrant startup ecosystem and world-class digital public infrastructure to solve real-world problems.

Under the theme of “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (Welfare for All, Happiness for All), the summit underscores a commitment to human-centric AI. PM Modi noted that artificial intelligence is already transforming critical sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and education in India, making services more inclusive and accessible. A major highlight of the summit is the unveiling of 12 indigenous foundation AI models, developed by Indian startups and research consortia. These models are specifically designed to operate across India’s 22 official languages, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign systems and promote “frugal innovation” that can be scaled globally.

The five-day event has drawn an unprecedented assembly of global power players, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, and tech titans like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI’s Sam Altman. With over 100 countries participating, the summit is organized around the “Seven Chakras” of AI impact—focusing on themes like ethical governance, safe and trusted AI, and democratizing computing resources. The accompanying India AI Impact Expo, sprawling across 70,000 square meters, features live demonstrations of AI-driven solutions for road safety, climate-resilient farming, and judicial efficiency. As India projects its AI market to exceed $17 billion by 2027, this summit serves as a bold declaration of the country’s intent to bridge the gap between innovation and equitable global impact.
