Due to ongoing heavy rainfall causing landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls in Aizawl district, all schools have been ordered closed today, Monday, June 2, to ensure the safety of students.
The announcement was made by Aizawl Deputy Commissioner ET Lalrempuia after reviewing warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and consulting disaster management officials.
On Sunday, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma held a review meeting with ministers, senior officials, and Deputy Commissioners joining via video conference. The meeting emphasized maintaining open access to district headquarters and the airport by keeping key roads operational.
The Chief Minister also directed adequate funds be allocated to District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and urged timely release of relief funds for affected families.
According to a preliminary report from the Department of Disaster Management & Rehabilitation (DM&R), 211 landslide locations have been recorded, 60 houses collapsed, 69 families evacuated, 83 roads blocked, four retaining walls collapsed, one electric pole fallen, two major landslides, and four deaths reported.
Rising water levels in riverside areas continue to pose risks and are being closely monitored.
The northeastern region is facing heavy rains, with Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh also experiencing flooding, landslides, and rising river levels.
In Assam, five deaths due to landslides have been reported, and the state government has announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia compensation for victims’ families, according to Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured all possible assistance to flood-affected northeastern states and has held talks with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Governor of Manipur to coordinate relief efforts.
