Tripura Expands Higher Education: Two New Degree Colleges to Open in Gomati District

The Tripura government has announced the establishment of two new Government Degree Colleges in Gomati district, set to begin operations from the 2025-26 academic session. The colleges will be located in Kakraban and Karbook, aiming to enhance access to higher education for students in rural areas.

According to Animesh Debbarma, Additional Secretary of the Higher Education Department, the initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to improve educational infrastructure and foster socio-economic development. The colleges will offer a range of undergraduate courses, with intake capacity and subjects determined based on local demand and available resources.

Admissions will follow the rules and regulations set by the affiliating university, with seat reservations governed by the latest Reservation Acts and Rules of the state government. The Higher Education Department will oversee the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff, including principals for both institutions.

The move has been welcomed by educationists and local leaders, who see it as a step toward bridging the gap in higher education accessibility in Tripura’s rural regions. The government has assured that all academic affairs, examinations, and curriculum will be administered in accordance with university guidelines, ensuring quality education for students.
