Zunheboto forest division marks International plastic bag free day with awareness drive and sustainable alternatives campaign

On July 3, the Zunheboto Forest Division celebrated International Plastic Bag Free Day by holding a celebration for its employees in the Divisional Forest Officer’s office. According to a press release from the Divisional Forest Office, Zunheboto, an awareness campaign was organized to promote sustainable alternatives and increase public knowledge of the negative impacts of plastic bags.

Divisional Forest Officer Obed Bohovi Swu visited the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent Police in Zunheboto with a Youthnet team and staff. They emphasized the importance of International Plastic Bag Free Day and urged the officers and staff to stop using “single use plastic bags” and instead use sustainable bags (reusable bags made of cloth, jute, paper, etc.).
Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto, Dharam Raj, brought up the negative health effects of plastics, stating that plastic products should be used less frequently in everyday home things since microplastics are bad for the body when consumed.

In addition, he urged the government to raise public awareness of plastics’ detrimental effects beyond degradation of the environment.
Following the training, a townwide poster and sticker campaign was launched to raise awareness of the negative effects of plastics in general.
